It is a mined mineral product like other rock products (gypsum, lime, rock phosphate, etc…) that formed millions of years ago when volcanic ash landed in high pH lakes. It’s essentially a nutrient and water holding magnet with loose bonds like a good fine clay, except it never breaks down and it’s not sticky or unworkable when wet because of the novel alumina-silica molecular structure. Plant roots can easily remove both water and nutrients from the bonds. Most sources in the Western US are OMRI certified and most mining operators include a revegetation plan as part of state licensing. It’s used extensively in organic farming in CA because it turns compost and manures into slow release fertilizer, preventing nutrient leaching into ground water as sometimes happens with sandy soils and shallow or perched water tables. The finer the grind the more surface area and greater holding capacity per pound. It’s a nice compliment to other organic soil health practices.

Add some soil conditioner and mix it in with your clay soil. Check your local garden center to see if they carry it in a large bag.

I lost half my dahlia tubers last year due to rotting in my heavy clay soil and am trying to prevent that from happening again! Thank you!

Here on the farm we rented a sod cutter to remove a large area of our lawn to plant into right away. Another option is to lay cardboard down to kill the grass. This can take a while though.

I have gone through all the necessary soil preparation steps, but how on earth do I kill all that grass without tilling too much of it into the beds? I am concerned that if I till it into the beds, it will create too much organic matter, and/or may not break down this season.

7-2-4, so low in phosphorus! Where are you getting your flower power? Your compost teas once your plants hit their flowering stage?
